Dancing Queen

Dear Mackenzie,

I love the toddler stage so much! As JieJie said, you are no longer "a boring baby who doesn't do anything" and you haven't reached your temper-prone Terrible Twos stage yet, so you're in the fun sweet spot in between! You grow more bubbly, playful and sociable every day and you do so many cute things that make our entire family smile. Some examples:

- You mimic me a lot. When I was making a cake the other day and you were sitting in the kitchen with me, you mixed your baby spoon around in your bowl just like I did with my wooden spoon and mixing bowl. When I was putting on lotion at night, you watched me and rubbed your hands all over your head and neck.

- You attempt to put your clothes and socks on by yourself. You're not quite there yet but it's so cute to watch you try.

- When I turn lights on or off, your eyes widen a LOT. It's as if the sudden appearance or disappearance of overhead lights completely amazes you!

- You toddle all over the place now and are getting so good walking. Sometimes you walk too quickly and almost tip over forward but you are able to catch yourself, find your balance and stand straight back up again. You even walked backward for the first time last week.

- Whenever your baby gate is open, you make a beeline for it! Now that you are more confident with walking, you love leaving the safe confines of your room to explore the rest of the house.

- When you do walk toward the door, you often turn back a little, stretch your arm out toward me and smile as if to say, "Come on, Mama, let's go!"

- You love to dance! Whenever I play music on my iPad, you smile and sway back and forth. If my iPad is on the coffee table, you often tap the screen and try to turn it on. When I help you with that and play a song, you smile such a big smile and start bouncing and swaying happily to the music.

- You like to chase me and be chased!

In other news, you have an eighth tooth coming out of your bottom gum. It is so cute but I am still breastfeeding you, so when you bite me while nursing, not so cute! You also tried whole milk for the first time last week but didn't like it. You drank it thinking it was water and immediately look startled when you realized it wasn't. I tried giving you a few more sips but you kept shaking your head and refused to drink anymore. I tried giving you milk again for a few days after that but you still refused it. So that is why we are still breastfeeding. We'll try again soon.

No One Messes With Your Sister!

Dear Mackenzie,

It has been one month since you turned one and you have blossomed so much in the past four weeks. It's as if you immediately jumped from being a little baby to a little girl! You have learned to do so many new things this past month and you have developed such a sweet, fun-loving personality.

New motor skills: walking a length of nearly ten feet on your own (you are such a good walker already and love walking all over the house--and it's so cute how proud and pleased you look every time you walk!); holding and drinking from your own bottle; stacking blocks; when sitting on the couch, turning over onto your belly and scooting off the couch backward; opening twist-cap bottles

New interests: pointing at everything, playing with light switches to turn the lights on and off; handing me series of things, listening to the songs that your dollhouse plays--you especially like the rub-a-dub song that plays when you push the button in the bathroom and will just sit next to your dollhouse and continuously push the button so the song plays over and over again

New cute behaviors: laying your cheek on the coffee table and smiling up at me; scribbling with a crayon and looking so happy while doing it; hearing us laugh really hard and laughing really hard along with us--I guess you don't want to be left out!

New growths: a tiny seventh tooth coming out of your bottom gum!

The biggest development, though, has been your sense of empathy. When you see one of your siblings crying, you scrunch up your face and whimper. You were especially sweet a few days ago when JieJie and Second GuhGaw were fighting over a colored pencil. Second GuhGaw wouldn't share it and JieJie started crying. You crawled over to JieJie, climbed into her lap and made whimpering sounds as if you were trying to commiserate with her. That alone was pretty darn cute but then you took it further--after you tried to comfort JieJie, you crawled over to Second GuhGaw, who was lying on his stomach and drawing. You climbed onto his back, sat on top of him and started yelling really loudly at him! You were totally scolding him for upsetting JieJie!

You are awesome! I love that you have become aware of other people's feelings and I really love that you had your sister's back!

Mommy Is Mine

Dear Mackenzie,

Like your three older siblings before you, you are not too keen on sharing me. We were in your room earlier today and Second GuhGaw was sitting in my lap. When you saw this, you immediately crawled over to us, grabbed my shoulder to pull yourself up to standing and attempted to push Second GuhGaw off my lap! When he didn't budge, you used your head to try and squeeze in between him and me! Hahaha! Possessive much?

You're One Year Old!

Dear Mackenzie,

When I was a kid, I dreamed of eventually growing up, getting married and having three kids: two boys and a girl. I wanted to name them Erik, Christopher and Samantha. Fast forward a couple decades and my childhood dream had come true: I was married and had two boys and a girl (though I ended up giving them more unique names). But as happy as I was and as chaotic as it already was juggling three young kids, I found myself wanting a fourth. Crazy, right?! A majority of the families we know have two kids, a couple have three and just one has four. Many people I met since Second GuhGaw was born looked at me incredulously when I told them I had three kids; what was I doing wanting four? But that was my new dream: to have a big family, a full house and a strong support system for my kids now and when they are older.

And that is how you came to be! If you thought I got a lot of incredulous looks before with three kids, you should have seen the looks I got when I my baby bump started showing and we told friends and family that #4 was on the way! I heard the words "wow," "brave" and yes, even "crazy" a LOT during my pregnancy with you! And yes, it was definitely crazy after we brought you home from the hospital and there were so many kids in the house. And yes, it got crazier still when a global pandemic overtook the world and we had to close restaurants, shut down schools and shelter-in-place at home for months on end. Honestly, if I had known a pandemic was coming, I'm not sure I still would have wanted another baby, given how risky it is to be inside a hospital now. Thus, I am so so SO glad that I couldn't tell the future because I am so so SO thankful that you are a part of my life! I will also be eternally grateful that you were born just a few months before I ever had to utter the word "coronavirus" and that you are too young to understand what "social distancing" means or why your entire family covers half their faces every time we go outside. During this pandemic, I have often joked to friends that when you are older, we will tell you about these things called "restaurants" and "playgrounds" where we used to go. However, it is my sincerest hope that the virus that has dominated the world during two-thirds of your first year will soon be a thing of the past and that when you are older, you will be going through a storage box at the back of my closet, pull out a pile of old cloth face masks and ask me, "What are these things?"

My Kenziebear, you have brought our family so much joy and laughter during this oftentimes bleak year. It has been wonderful having a cute, squishy, happy baby in the house again and your older siblings absolutely adore you. When you were a newborn, we marveled over how small and delicate you were and over the past year, we have marveled over how much you have grown and every new skill you have acquired. You can stand up from a sitting position all on your own now and are independently taking more and more steps each day. You already said your first word (hi!) and say hi to us all of the time. You are incredibly observant and notice how we use everyday objects: when you hold the TV remote, you aim it at the TV like we do; you correctly hold a pencil and attempt to scribble in my crossword puzzle book; you take my lotion bottle and tap it onto the top of your hand. You are empathetic and whimper when you see one of your siblings crying. You are funny and know when you are being cute. You are also playful and sweet and the perfect addition to our family!

I love you so much, baby girl! Happy first birthday!

Belly Squeezes

Dear Mackenzie,

Cute things you did recently:

1) Stepped on the pedal of the baby gate in your doorway--you already know how it works!

2) Squished your face against the skylight in the attic floor--you were playing in the attic with JieJie and sitting near the skylight when you looked down and saw me below on the second-floor staircase landing. I think it weirded you out to see me through the floor like that and you pressed your face to the glass and called out to me, as if you were trying to get to me. Your adorable face was squashed so much against the glass--you looked hilarious and so cute!

3) Went up to JieJie and kept squeezing her belly--hahaha!

First Steps?

Dear Mackenzie,

You took your first steps today . . . kind of? We were on your playmat when I put you in a standing position and let go. You stood on your own for a few seconds and then took two of the smallest baby steps before I caught you. So you walked! Or maybe it was more of a stumble forward into my arms? Either way, exciting! You are on your way to real walking soon!

Almost One!

Dear Mackenzie,

You turned 11 months old today, which means you are just one month shy of being ONE YEAR OLD!! I have already starting getting emotional over this huge upcoming milestone and cannot believe how much you have already grown. You are such a sweetheart and every day brings new changes. For example:

-Your legs are growing stronger. You can squat and are able to stand on your own for a couple seconds.
-Your vocal cords are also growing stronger. You squeal and scream SO loudly!
- You have two more teeth breaking through your upper gum, so now you have four teeth on top and two on the bottom. That's more than any of your siblings had at this age.
-You are a pretty good eater and when you don't want anymore food, you scrunch up your face, shake your head and swat the spoon away with your hand. It's cute, even though it's a bit annoying since I always want you to finish your food.
-You also swat your toothbrush away when you've decided that you've had enough brushing.
-You love Mum-Mum crackers and snack puffs and get visibly excited (your face lights up and you start bouncing up and down) when you see me get ready to give you some.
-You love pulling yourself up to standing in your crib and jumping up and down as if you are on a trampoline.
-You love playing with water bottles, lotion bottles, JieJie's headband and my hairclips. It's so cute when you pull the hairclip out of my hair and then try to put it back by just pressing it to my head, as if it was a sticker.

-You clap a lot, especially if you see other people clapping. You also clap when you see me come into the room!
-You like to crawl over to me and climb up onto me.
-You hold your arms out to your sides when you want me to pick you up.
-You really love your reflection and get the BIGGEST grin on your face when you see your face in the mirror!
-You wave hi and bye with both hands--a double wave!
-You like to play peekaboo, whether it's hiding behind a towel or peeking out from the side of your crib.
-You have started dancing! When you hear music, you sway back and forth to the tune.

Happy last month of babyhood!

Walking the Walk

Dear Mackenzie,

You began walking with your toy walker today! It was so exciting to watch you take those first (assisted) steps! And you had the proudest smile on your face, as if you knew that you were doing something awesome!

Baby Bumps

Dear Mackenzie,

How is it that everything you do is SO CUTE?! You have so many adorable mannerisms, including:

- moving your mouth as if you are chewing gum
- clicking your tongue against the roof of your mouth
- squeezing your belly rolls
- tilting your head and smiling at me
- covering your face with your hands and peeking out from behind them when you want to play peek-a-boo
- holding your pointer and middle finger up to make the cutest baby peace sign
-getting a huge grin on your face whenever you pull yourself up to standing or when someone helps you stand up
-getting a huge grin on your face when you see your reflection in the mirror (I don't blame you; you are pretty dang cute!)
- getting a huge grin on your face, flapping your arms like a penguin and immediately crawling over to me when I come into your room (the BEST greeting!)

You are so happy and active and I love watching how you interact with the world around you. We were playing in your room one day when you looked into your playmat mirror. You must have seen something in there that really interested you because you then pressed your face so hard against the mirror trying to see whatever it was that you saw in it. And a few weeks ago, we went to the beach and it was your first time playing in the sand. The first time GuhGaw went to the beach as a baby, he ate a fistful of sand. The first time JieJie went to the beach, she cried hysterically when we tried to set her down on the sand. The first time Second GuhGaw went, he was fine and played happily with his trucks. You were pretty chill. You had no problem sitting in the sand but you did seem a little put-off by it--you didn't really touch it at all and didn't crawl around anywhere the whole afternoon, probably because it felt strange on your skin. As for the ocean, the water was really cold that day so when I tried to put your feet in the water, you stood on one leg with the other one bent--like a flamingo!

When we're not on the beach, you are crawling everywhere and pulling yourself up to standing all of the time. It's so exciting watching you become more mobile but all the accidentally hitting your face on your crib bars, falling backward on the floor, bumping your head on one thing or another . . . ugh!

First Wave and Scary Faces

Dear Mackenzie,

Yesterday, you waved goodbye for the very first time! We video chat with PoiPoi on the phone every day and when we said bye yesterday, you waved! So cute!

Less cute (but still kind of cute) was today, when we were watching the Food Network in the living room. You were chilling in your playard when Alton Brown's face suddenly came on up close and LARGE on the screen. You turned to se his big, bulging eyes on our huge screen and started WAILING. Aww, I'm so sorry you got so scared!

The last time I saw you that frightened was back around May. You were sitting in your high chair and facing the windows that look out into our backyard. Daddy had gone out the front door and then walked around to the back to check on the sprinklers. When you saw him through the windows, you started wailing so hard! I guess you hadn't expected to see anyone outside! You calmed down when I picked you up but you were so shaken, when Daddy came back in the house, you started crying as soon as you saw him again! Poor thing!

Grab and Go

Dear Mackenzie,

*sigh* You have reached the stage where you want to grab everything and anything that you see, so nothing is safe! When we went out last week, you kept grabbing at my face mask and trying to take it off my face. When I was looking at my phone the other day, you swatted at it and knocked it out of my hand. If JieJie is wearing her glasses, you try to pull them off her face. This morning, I had a cup of coffee on the kitchen counter and you grabbed the top of it, splashing the entire contents on the counter, my legs and the floor. Fun!

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Dear Mackenzie,

You learned how to do three new behaviors in the past two days:

1) You can turn yourself in a complete circle while seated.

2) You pulled yourself up to a STANDING position! So exciting! And nerve-wracking because here come the falls!

3) Today, you clapped for the first time! You were sitting in the playard while the rest of the family was hanging on the couch. One minute you were rubbing at your wrist and the next, you were clapping your hands together!

I love watching you grow, Kenziebear!

Motor Skilled

Dear Mackenzie,

So much news to share! This past month was a big one because you learned so many new things! At the beginning of the month, you were getting ready to crawl--you could get into crawl position but didn't move anywhere. During the last week of July, you began going from a crawl position to a sitting position and by July 30th, you started crawling across the floor! It's really fun to see what objects catch your interest enough for you to crawl over to them--you are particularly fond of your older siblings' paperback books (but barely give the time of day to any of your baby board books--unless you want to chew on them), the heating vent near the floor with a little brass tassel on it and . . . me! When I come into your room and sit down on the play mat, you always smile, make your way over to me and try to climb into my lap. It is so sweet!

As if the crawling alone wasn't enough, you also acquired a number of other new motor skills this month:

-You can drink water from a cup (and went through a brief stage where you actually pushed your baby bottle away and refused to drink water from it, as if that was so June 2020).
-When I'm playing around with you and put a washcloth on top of your head, you know how to reach up and pull it off.
-In your crib, you can go from laying on your back, to rolling over onto your tummy, to pushing up into crawl position, to sitting back on your butt to grabbing the top of the crib and pulling yourself up onto your knees. Wow! We had to lower your crib the day you learned how to kneel.
-You started reaching your arms out toward me when you want me to pick you up (which is a lot!).

In other news, you started eating blueberries, broccoli, carrots and chicken (and are a fan of all of them). Your top two center teeth are also growing in and you've already bit me--sometimes quite sharply!--with them a few times!

I can't believe how many changes there were these past four weeks. You even look significantly bigger in your 9-month photo in comparison to your 8-month photo:

Taking your 9-month photo was also significantly harder because you barely sat still. You kept lunging forward and trying to crawl off the bed!

You are so cute! I can't wait to see what the next month brings!

Crawl Space

Dear Mackenzie,

Hello my giggly girl! It is still harder to make you laugh than any of my other kids but I am getting more and more giggles out of you now. And I can always make you smile when I make exaggerated happy faces at you, nibble on your super chubby torso, dance with you and hold you up in the air the way Patrick Swayze holds Jennifer Gray up at the end of Dirty Dancing (will that scene still be as iconic when you're an adult reading this?). Strangely, you also always smile when you see me drinking out of my water bottle. I don't know why that makes you smile but it does! And when you smile, you show off your two adorable, pearly white baby teeth . . . which you occasionally bite me with!

At your checkup last week, your weight was 20 pounds, 7 ounces and your height was 27.5 inches. Your motor skills are developing nicely. You can sit up on your own pretty well and when you're sitting in your crib, you can hold the side of it and pull yourself up about a half-inch off the mattress. You often rotate your wrists as if you're slowly waving (are you waving?) and can push up onto your hands and knees. I don't know if you just get scared or if it's too much weight on your arms, but you often start whimpering when you get yourself into that position. You can't crawl forward yet but you do crawl backward!

You are usually pretty quiet but when you are vocal, you are LOUD! You love playing with remotes, pulling hair and eating apples, bananas, peaches and ground beef. You don't seem very crazy about avocados.

Mom

In the Crib

Dear Mackenzie,

Last night, you officially stopped sleeping in the bassinet in my bedroom and started sleeping in the crib in your bedroom across the hall. This milestone was way overdue--the top of your head and the bottoms of your feet have been grazing the ends of the bassinet for awhile but I wanted to keep you in it--and hold onto your infancy--for just a little while longer. And now I feel guilty for doing that because your new crib mattress seems to be extremely comfortable--so comfortable that you slept on it for over 10 hours last night without waking up! I put you down right before midnight last night and when I woke up at 6am, you were still soundly sleeping. Same thing at 8am, then 9am and 10am! At 10:15am, I actually unwrapped you from your blanket to wake you up and feed you. In the bassinet, you'd been sleeping for six- or seven-hour stretches so I guess the crib mattress is much cozier!

Summer Love

Dear Mackenzie,

We have entered month 7! You are doing so well with eating solids and have liked everything I have made for you so far (which includes green peas, zucchini, sweet potatoes and butternut squash). You also have a new trick: rolling over onto your stomach! You just started doing it last week and every time you complete a roll onto your stomach, you grin and look so proud of yourself! Yesterday, you mastered rolling back onto your back after you'd rolled onto your stomach. At one point, you were in your crib and you just kept rolling from back to stomach to back to stomach . . . I think you did it about a dozen times before you got tired, haha!

You didn't have a doctor's appointment this month so I don't know how much weight you gained but you did get significantly taller because Daddy had to raise the height of your jumper. You're wearing 9-months-sized clothing and size 4 diapers. You have also stopped drooling so you don't need to wear bibs anymore (whereas JieJie drooled so much for so long that she was still wearing bibs as a toddler). But the drooling may begin again soon because when I look closely at your bottom gums, I can see the beginnings of two tiny baby teeth!

Things you currently like: attention from me (you always smile when I make eye contact with you!), jumping in your jumper, spinning your alphabet globe, banging toys on your high chair tray (sometimes you bang them so hard, the loud sound makes you wince and squeeze your eyes shut--yet you keep banging away), getting tickled on the sides of your stomach and under your armpits and watching Olaf sing "In Summer." Daddy discovered that last one! Every night when Daddy holds you while I go shower, you cry. A lot. You cry and fuss and shake your head and rub your face violently against his shoulder. Nothing he does can console you . . . except when he plays a YouTube video of Olaf's signature song. Other Frozen songs don't work. Other Olaf songs don't work. But "In Summer" calms you down every time. I heard it myself last night when I was heading to the bathroom for my shower. You were wailing but when Daddy turned on the video, you immediately stopped and cooed, "Ooooo." How cute!

Standing Tall

Dear Mackenzie,

New skills you picked up this week:

* Standing up on your own -- when you hold onto your crib, you can actually stand up all by yourself for a minute or so! Your legs are so strong. Amazing!

* Blowing raspberries -- you push your lips together so hard sometimes your face turns a little red, haha!

* Curling your tongue -- you just did it for the first time tonight. The only other person in our family who can do that is Daddy.

On another note, I was eating an ice cream cone after dinner tonight and you wanted it so badly! You kept eyeing it and when I held it in front of you (I am so mean, I know!), your eyes widened so much and you reached for it so desperately with first one hand and then both hands. You were so cute and I wanted so much to give you a taste!

Bouncer Chair Scare

Dear Mackenzie,

It was bittersweet when you outgrew your infant clothing several months ago--and now you have outgrown your infant bouncer! You are so strong and active and whenever you sit in it, you kick your legs so hard that the whole chair bounces up and down with an almost alarming force. And now that you can push yourself up into a sitting position, I can no longer safely leave you in the seat.

How did I learn this? Well, you, Second GuhGaw and I were in Second GuhGaw's bedroom and you were sitting in the bouncer. I went to use the bathroom and a couple minutes later, Second GuhGaw came running into the bathroom and said, "Mackenzie is looking at the ground!" What now? I wasn't sure what he was getting at but then I heard you crying really hard and ran back to the bedroom. And there you were, hanging over the edge of the bouncer. You were leaning all the way to the side and your head was about an inch from the floor. Oh my god oh my god oh my god! You had sat up and the weight of your upper torso had made you fall forward. Thank goodness the straps had been tight enough to hold you in to the chair and that you weren't so heavy that the whole bouncer flipped over. And thank goodness Second GuhGaw came to get me right away! What a good big brother!

Six-Month Update

Dear Mackenzie,

You are six months old! When I was pregnant with you, six months went by sooooo slooooowly but these past six months with you have flown by. You are such a sweet and happy little girl and I love watching you grow and evolve every day.

At your checkup today, you measured in at 18.9 pounds and 27 1/4 inches long. You are so big that you barely fit in the bassinet anymore and are growing out of your size 6-months clothing. You have such strong legs that I often lay perpendicular to you in my bed so that you can kick my back and give me a good back massage! You smile a lot, like to stick out your tongue, can grab items with both of your hands and--something I'm especially happy about--have gone from pooping an average of six times a day to only one time a day!

You often stare at me when I am eating so you were clearly ready to start eating solids this month! I started you on rice cereal and you have been doing really well with it. You also like sitting in your high chair--and sucking on the tray!

You don't like to be left alone and cry for me when I leave you. When you're really upset, you emit these incredibly shrill, ear-piercing shrieks (which Daddy loves). But then as soon as you see me again, you sigh happily, grin from ear to ear and kick your feet really hard (similar to how a puppy wags its tail when it is happy, haha!). I don't like hearing you shriek when we're apart but I do love your joyful reaction when we're reunited!

Longer Legs

Dear Mackenzie,

Two weeks ago, you got a new toy--a baby jumper! You have really strong (and beefy!) legs and love to stand upright, so you have been really enjoying the jumper. You look so happy playing with the attached toys and jumping away.

When I first put you in the jumper, it was already on the lowest level setting but your legs were too short to reach the floor, so I put the Mouse Trap game box underneath you and it was the just the right height to let you push off of it and jump. When you were in the jumper last night, though, Daddy took away the box and to our surprise--your feet reached the floor perfectly! You grew so much in just two weeks! It really does seem to happen in a blink of an eye.

Homebound

Dear Mackenzie,

You are such a happy baby! You smile a lot and always with your mouth wide open, which I love! But I gotta say, it's really hard to make you laugh! When Second GuhGaw was a baby, he laughed at all sorts of things all of the time (and still laughs a lot at everything). You don't find many things (like the silly faces or sounds I make) to be all that hilarious and when I do something that actually does make you laugh, it only makes you laugh a couple of times. Again in comparison to Second GuhGaw, if something made him laugh, I could do it dozens of times and he would laugh every time. You are a much tougher audience!

I love all of your little baby mannerisms and am just trying to soak them all in before they disappear. You often pause while nursing to look up and smile at me or stare into my eyes. You stick out the tip of your tongue a lot and you do this adorable snow angel wiggle dance whenever you're lying down in your crib or on the changing table. You now reach for objects that I hold in front of your face (your first sign of independence!) and have an incredibly strong grip. You especially love this one rattle you have and shake it so violently that I have to sit next to you when you play with it to make sure you don't bonk yourself in the face with it (which you have done a few times). You also love the rattle so much that you immediately cry when you drop it.

In addition to your strong grip, you also have strong lungs! You squeal and shout REALLY loudly for a baby who is only 5 months old! I guess you figure you have to since you are the youngest and you have to compete with five other people in our household in order to be heard! We were playing Taboo the other night and the game got really loud with Daddy, Big GuhGaw, JieJie, Second GuhGaw and me all calling out answers. You clearly weren't going to be left out because you were shouting along with us--and you were loudest!

You are currently 17.8 pounds and 26 inches tall. You are sleeping sometimes more than 8 hours at night, which is AMAZING. But there were two not amazing developments this month. The first one is that the eczema that you started to get last month has gotten worse and is now quite bad on your face, torso, arms and legs (so, like, your entire body). Your pediatrician recommended a hydrocortisone gel, so hopefully that will help.

The second incident is so crazy and unthinkable and literally life-changing that I still can't believe it's happening. You are way too young to even understand what is going on right now but the world, and I mean the entire world, is going through a pandemic. A new coronavirus started making people really sick in China back in November and to the disbelief of everyone, it has literally spread to every corner of the globe in a very short matter of time. People in every country have been infected and it is the most contagious disease humankind has ever seen. If you have the coronavirus, you can infect someone just by coughing or sneezing on them. Some people who get the virus recover but many, many people who contracted the virus have died and there is currently no cure or vaccine so we are all practicing "social distancing" and staying away from each other. Schools, restaurants, movie theaters and practically everything except essential businesses such as grocery stores and pharmacies are closed and people are being asked to stay in their homes to prevent spreading the disease. We can't see our other family members, we can't see our friends, we can't see anyone. I have never lived through anything like this in my life and it is mind-boggling to think that one disease has managed to affect the entire population of the world and there is nothing we can to do stop it.

After you were born, we were kind of in quarantine because I didn't take you anywhere and didn't invite any friends over to meet you. Your immune system was still so new and weak and I didn't want to expose you to any unnecessary germs. You were also born right before the dead of winter, so it was too cold to take you anywhere. But by the beginning of March, you were older, the weather was warming up a little and I took you for your very first walk around the neighborhood in your stroller on March 9. Little did I know that it would be your first and last walk around the neighborhood because now we have to quarantine ourselves. The coronavirus had been gradually spreading from China to Europe and the West Coast of the United States. In February, there were no reported coronavirus cases in New York. But it all changed in March. The number of New Yorkers who became ill with the coronavirus suddenly skyrocketed into the thousands within the first two weeks of March. New York became an epicenter of the virus and we no longer felt safe going anywhere. The public schools were closed on March 16 and we stopped leaving the house.

We have now been in quarantine for a month. We haven't seen PoiPoi or GongGong or any of our friends other than on FaceTime and only Daddy leaves the house once a week to get groceries. Your siblings have started online school with their teachers and we try to stay active by doing dance and yoga videos on YouTube, playing in the attic or getting some fresh air in the backyard. It has been a huge change for everyone. Before this, we saw PoiPoi almost every day. We always went somewhere on the weekends--friends' houses, museums, playgrounds--and ate out at restaurants a couple times a week. Now we are stuck at home all day, every day. But I am grateful that at least the six of us are together, that we have the option to stay at home safely and that we are all healthy. Hopefully, this will all be over sooner rather than later and when you are older, we will tell you about that insane time when you were a baby and the whole world couldn't leave their homes.

Loud and Proud

Dear Mackenzie,

My fourth child is now four months old! You were a tiny newborn but you have grown into a full-fledged chubby infant--and I love your round cheeks, your dimpled arms and your Michelin Man-like legs so much! At your checkup this month, you measured in at 16.7 pounds and 25.25 inches long.

The first year with a baby is so fun because there are so many cute new behaviors with each passing month. Month 4 with you has brought us:

- The sweet smiles when you see me, I dance with you, I bring our faces close together and I hold you high up in the air

- The looking up and smiling at me while you nurse (always one of my favorite things about nursing!)

- The way you stop crying instantly when I get near you

- The "happy baby" yoga pose, where you grab your feet and hold them

- The "happy Mackenzie" dance, where you are your back and you pump your arms up and down and kick your feet while wiggling your torso back and forth

- The biting of the lower lip

- The pressing of the bottoms of your feet together

- The fact that you can kind of sit up on your own (see photo above!)

- The way you get scared when I carry you down the stairs, the blender is on or Daddy blows his nose

- The laughing when Daddy sticks a tissue up his nose

- The way you sometimes sound like a really loud screeching alley cat

- The time I was holding you in my lap while talking to Big GuhGaw's teacher on the phone but you were babbling and screeching so loudly that I couldn't even hear her!

- The super wonderful fact that you are sleeping for SIX HOURS straight at night!!!

Giggly Girl

Dear Mackenzie,

Another month has flown by! You are three months old now and just getting cuter, sweeter and squishier every day! Daddy calls you Smiles because--can you guess why?--you smile so much! You love it when people interact with you and reward them with sweet little drooly grins. You always smile adoringly at your siblings when they are near and when you wake up from a nap and see me, you smile a big open-mouthed smile at me while you wave your arms and kick your feet in excitement--it's so cute and makes me so happy!

What's better than baby smiles? Baby giggles! I heard you giggle for the first time last Wednesday when I was holding you in front of the big mirror in your room. You love looking at your reflection and always smile at it. That night, I was being silly and sticking my tongue in and out at our reflections and making funny sounds. You apparently thought that was hilarious and let out the sweetest little giggles! I have done the silly-faces-in-the-mirror thing a couple more times since last week and you always giggle but strangely, you don't giggle when I make the silly faces directly at you. Guess it's funnier in the mirror?

Other new developments this past month: You are cooing and babbling a LOT; you now weigh 14 pounds, 1 ounce; you are wearing size 2 diapers but need to switch up to size 3 soon; you are barely fitting in your size 3 months clothing and need to switch up to size 6 months; you are waving your arms around so much, especially your right fist; you love sucking on your right fist (but never your left one); you have such strong leg muscles and can stand really firmly when I hold you up on my lap; your neck muscles are really strong, too, and you can hold your head up for long stretches; if you're crying, I can get you to stop when I sing "Skida markinee dinkeedink."

Sweet Smiles

Dear Mackenzie,

There were a lot of big changes this past month! First of all, you jumped from weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces at your one-month checkup to weighing 11 pounds, 2 ounces at your two-month checkup yesterday. You are wearing size 3-months clothing and size 1 diapers (both of which are already starting to get a little snug) and have the CUTEST chubby cheeks now! They droop down like a bulldog's cheeks! You also have a big round tummy and chubby thighs, so you are so adorably squishy and kissable!

Other new behaviors this month:

- You recognize my voice and are instantly calmed by it.

- You like sticking out your teeny little tongue often.

- You are cooing and trying to talk a lot when someone talks to you. You open your mouth and move it around a lot in an attempt to speak.

- You are more active and constantly waving your arms around and kicking your feet back and forth.

- You are fascinated by the Snoopy wall decal right next to your changing pad and often stare at it intently during diaper changes.

- You like your baby swing and fall asleep in it a lot.

- At night, you sometimes sleep for as long as 4-5 hours (woohoo!).

- We went on our first two non-checkup outings: the first was to a Thai restaurant for dinner with my cousins (you ended up sleeping in your car seat the entire time) and the second was to a Chinese place for dim sum with a big group of my relatives. During the latter, you were so good and calm and hardly fussed or cried at all, even though there were a lot of people and everyone was trying to hold you and touch you.

All of the above are great but the BEST new behavior this month, though, is that you are smiling at people! I love love love it when I approach you in your crib or rocker and your face breaks out into a huge smile when you realize it's me. And when your face lights up when one of your siblings comes up to you and says hi. And when you smile at the silly faces Daddy makes at you. You also smile at people you have never met before when they smile at you, including your cousin Julietta and a few of my friends who have come over to meet you. Your smiles are the sweetest and make everyone around you melt!
